Last week really ought to have been the end of the McCain campaign. With the whole country feeling (and its financial class acting) as if we lived in a sweltering, bankrupt banana republic, and with this misery added to the generally Belarusian atmosphere that surrounds any American trying to board a train, catch a plane, fill a prescription, or get a public servant or private practitioner on the phone, it was surely the moment for the supposedly reform candidate to assume a commanding position. And yet […]none of this has translated into any measurable advantage for the Democrat. There are three possible reasons for such a huge failure on Barack Obama’s part. The first, and the most widely canvassed, is that he is too nice, too innocent, too honest, and too decent to get down in the arena and trade bloody thrusts with the right-wing enemy. The second is that crisis and difficulty, at home and abroad, sometimes make electors slightly more likely to trust the existing establishment, or some version of it, than any challenger or newcomer, however slight. The third is that Obama does not, and perhaps even cannot, represent “change” for the very simple reason that the Democrats are a status quo party. Christopher Hitchens - Sept 22 - Slate.com

Deletions

I have decided to remove all the pics of my daughters and nephew for privacy reasons.  I will set up a private flickr page soon so I can invite any family and friends to see how my girls are doing.  No problems but just being safe!  (For family and friends who want to see pics please email me and I’ll be sure to add you once I get the photos transferred.) Thanks…

McCain Special on Fox News

I watched the bio-special on McCain late last night.  I’ve got to admit that it sure didn’t make me like him any more.  He really seems very socially awkward and someone with a volcanic temper just below the surface.  Definitely not a Reagan or Clinton in style or personality

Many of the avid Twitterers, Flickerers and Facebook users [d]escribed an unexpected side-effect of constant self-disclosure. The act of stopping several times a day to observe what you’re feeling or thinking can become, after weeks and weeks, a sort philosophical act. It’s like the Greek dictum to “know thyself,” or the therapeutic concept of mindfulness. [H]aving an audience can make the self-reflection even more acute, since [we’re] trying to describe [our] activities in a way that is not only accurate but also interesting to others: the status update as a literary form.
